We place a great deal of importance on the simple components of cattle breeding, which many breeders overlook or ignore entirely. Producing cattle is a ground up concept, sound feet, free moving joints, strength of bone, well attached udders, plenty of milk, volume, length, reproductively sound, width, strength and stature are all important traits that will affect the efficiency and profitability of the individual animal and the herd. If these are all in place opportunities can be created and exploited to realise the full genetic potential of the herd members.

Our cows are managed extensively on grass during the summer with a combination of silage and straw being offered during the winter housing period. The cows are group housed in straw bedded accommodation during the winter. All cows receive free access minerals.

Yearling heifers receive minimal concentrate feeding during their second summer during periods of limited grass and when the feed value of the grazing drops. Calves have restricted access to a good quality creep feed, when they are old enough to benefit .

We do not currently vaccinate any cattle against diseases, preffering to practice a good bio-security regime and only treat for worms and liver fluke at housing time, the aim being to maintain the herd economically whilst maintaining a high degree of hardiness and natural immunity.
